Yucky Situation
Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 23:09

I hate it when my friend generalize about things they dislike about their friends. It seems that lately, I've been listening to a lot of this. They're either talking about something "everyone" does, or something "everyone" doesn't do, and I am left to ponder whom is included in this "everyone."

Is this a subtle way of telling me that I'm a horrible friend? Or is this their way of saying that I'm a good friend, and that it is everyone else that is bad. I understand that there is probably not that much thought in it, that they are just venting, but it's hard for me not to be bothered, in wondering whether or not I should be trying to fix this, by acting less (or more) like what they are talking about.

The other day, when faced with this situation, I argued it, gently of course. I said "Well, I don't do that..." because it was something I clearly didn't do. But sometimes it isn't so cut and dry. It's a hard situation to put someone in. I try really hard not to generalize like that...but I'm sure I make people feel like this too from time to time.

Has this been choppy? I'll go back and read it tomorrow.
