Part One: Last night's Dream

I often worry about things in the back of my mind, but not in a conscious sense. When this happens, and I don't pay a whole lot of attention to something during the day, it shows up at night, in upsetting dreams. I don't really remember last night's with a whole lot of detail. What I do remember has to do with Katie and Serena.

Serena and I aren't talking right now. And in the dream, this was true also. However, at some point, I went off to do something with Katie. I was having a really hard time with something (no idea what), and I needed someone to talk to. So I talked to Katie about it. She didn't understand what I was saying, and got very very angry with me. I, then, sort of ran all the way home. I was at my house, freaking out hysterically at both the fact that nobody understood how upset I was and the fact that Katie was so angry with me. Linda came over to try to comfort me. And I was infinitely grateful to her. I spazzes and she let me. And then we saw Katie and Serena walk by outside, and I just felt this stabbing pain. Katie saw me crying in the window and came to the door. She hugged me and apologized and we forgave each other for what had been said. Thankfully. But it was a very stressful dream.

Part Two: My morning

I got up and went to class. My first class was Sex roles and family (a really good class, by the way). Today we were watching a video. The video was entitled "Boys and Girls are Different." It had originally appeared on tv, as an extra news show for some network. I don't remember which one. Anyway, it was amazing. This morning, in that class, was the first time I've felt passionate about something in a while. Don't confuse this for meaning the video was amazing, however. The video was complete bullshit. It featured Gloria Steinem (whom I found to be really cool) and some other feminists pitted against a psychologist, some researchers and this ASSHOLE news anchor. I don't want to go through the whole video, but the main idea was that they're doing research to show that the reason that women are treated differently and thusly inferior to men is that women ARE different and inferior to me, biologically. It made me think of the Katie/Aaron field hockey argument from high school. It was complete bullshit. They were justifying why girl toys are girl toys and boy toys are boy toys, saying that the children prefer their own gender-specific toys, but they were clearly leaving out key points. For instance, they talked about how girls put on make-up when it is given to them, but boys don't. Sure, but how can you say that's biological? To me, it seems clear that girls are obviously going to use make-up. They're taught and shown their whole lives that that's what make-up is for. And similarly boys aren't supposed to wear make up. Blat!

The anchor was very very condescending toward women throughout the entire video. And the way it was put together, it made the feminists look like complete lunatics. It made them look like irrational bitches that just wanted to sue everyone. I was angry with that. It was obvious that that's not what these women meant. Then, he started talking about feminist movements, and how he was glad that they had happened because he believes that women should be able to do what they want. Yet, he went on and on about how he doesn't think women should be treated the same as men, because it is clear that there are valid differences.

haha, and the best part was this group of men that got up there and complained about how they're no longer allowed to live to the fullest of their masculinity because of these women that are always getting on their cases. Man, talk about foolish.

Here are some other memorable moments from this piece of shit video:

*When women are more cuddly and nurturing with women (since it is proven through many studies that people act differently with even newborn babies when told what the baby's genders are...notice the video didn't mention that...) it is because they're responding to inborn cues from the child.

*A direct (sarcastic) quote from the anchor: "It seems everyone is enforcing equality these days."

*This stupid asshole woman who apparently thinks women are inferior (don't ASK me why) actually said that the reason men are engineers and other "male" professions is because they are naturally better at them, and are more likely to choose what they're good at. mmhmm. Yeah.

But my complaint with the video in general was that the entire point was to show why women and men are not given equal weight in society, yet the research they showed proved only that men and women are biologically different. They didn't say a single thing that would even begin to convince me that women are inferior. There was a pyschologist that talked a lot about how it's good for men and women to be different because diversity is good. I agree with that. But it wasn't answering the question.

Man, this whole video was one big huge flawed piece of shit.

The best moment (in actuality):

Anchor: Isn't it true that women are naturally better at nurturing?

Gloria Steinem: No *long pause* Next question.

So yeah, now I'm just chilling out here, enjoying some free time and the Blue Crush soundtrack before my next class.

mmm, it's so good :-)
